Ikea’s Varmblixt lamp

The Varmblixt is already the smart lamp you should buy, and now Ikea has made it twenty dollars harder to resist. That's our take, plain and simple. A donut-shaped puck of light that sits on your nightstand or hangs on the wall, drops from $99.99 to $79.99 through November 11th, and the only real question is whether you grab one now or wait for the next sale and risk the color you wanted selling out. It's not the flashiest deal of the season, nobody is camping out for a mood lamp, but it might be the most quietly useful one. And in a world where Amazon hid a camera in your speaker and stuffed Alexa in a frame, a lamp that just does lamp things, and does them well, feels like a small act of rebellion.

Let's get specific about what you're actually getting, because the marketing gloss hides the good stuff. The Varmblixt puts out 180 lumens, which is not a lot. It will not light a room. It will light the corner of a room, or the side of your face while you read in bed, and that is exactly the point. The new model cycles through twelve preset colors, pink, blue, green, white, the works, replacing the predecessor that only did orange. The included wireless remote controls brightness, color, and power without any app or hub. You can also use that remote to control other compatible Ikea lights, which is the kind of detail that makes you wonder why more companies don't just put a physical remote in the box. For the tinkerers, Matter support plugs it into Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa, unlocking hundreds more colors, schedules, and routines. The Dirigera hub adds a feature that gradually shifts the white temperature throughout the day, mimicking natural daylight. That's the razor clam: a lamp that can gently wake you up with warmer light and ease you into sleep with cooler tones, all without you touching a phone. Meanwhile, Amazon's Echo duo gets a smarter home and a bigger ear, which is fine if you want Alexa in every room, but the Varmblixt asks for less and delivers more of what you actually need from a lamp.

The price cut matters because the Varmblixt was already the affordable smart lamp that didn't make you feel like you'd compromised. At $79.99, it undercuts most Matter-compatible lights by a significant margin, and it does so without stripping out the physical controls that make smart home gear usable for actual humans. You do not need a phone to turn it on. You do not need an account. You plug it in, screw a mount into the wall if you want it there, and the remote lives on your nightstand. That is the recipe for a product that stays in your home instead of ending up in a drawer. The only catch, and we always look for the catch, is the November 11th deadline. After that, it's back to full price, and Ikea does not always restock these things quickly. If you have been eyeing a smart lamp, or if you have a dark corner that needs a gentle splash of color, this is the moment. The Varmblixt is not trying to be the centerpiece of your smart home. It just wants to be the light you reach for in the dark, and at this price, it earns that spot.

From The Verge

With its playful design, versatility, and relatively affordable price, the Ikea Varmblixt quickly became one of my colleague Jennifer Pattison Tuohy’s new favorite smart light products when she tested it in April. Now, the donut-shaped lamp is on sale for $79.99 ($20 off) through November 11th at Ikea.
