Photographer took unflattering photos

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I recently hired a photographer (I’m a photographer myself and I photograph weddings and content shoots). I love this photographers style and how they edit and the photos. The photos themselves objectively are not bad however I do genuinely feel like a portrait photographers job is to capture their subjects looking their best, work out their best angles and to take loads of photos in order to have plenty to choose from and options to replace photos their client isn’t happy with.

I felt like my shoot was an after thought, when I first spoke with this photographer I showed him a load of inspiration in terms of angles and poses as I trusted the editing style but I wanted him to capture the energy I was after. He arrived with no shot list and it felt like he kind of winged it, we were on location bouncing around all day and he was asking me questions throughout the whole process and capturing really ugly shots of me talking (I assume in an effort to make me more relaxed? But it makes the shots look terrible) I love a candid but I think a mid conversation candid is a no no for a shoot tbh.

He sent me the raws to choose from and there wasn’t that much to choose from so I settled for what I could hoping the edit might make me feel better about them. But to be honest with you, I feel like they’re don’t capture me looking my best at all and even the edit feels rushed and not carefully done and I feel like he just hasn’t done a good job.

Does anyone else agree that as a portrait photographer he should at-least direct me a bit and help me find my best angles? That’s what I do almost every shoot I do, and the fact he didn’t arrive with any kind of shot list I just feel like he ignored my brief totally.

Is it fair for me to ask for a reshoot in this situation?
