Rent-a-Coop Hemp-Is It Worth the Price?

Rent-a-Coop Hemp-Is It Worth the Price?

I'm going to yes for our setup. We have 4 - 9mo old plymouth rock hens in a 6W x 8L x 6H chicken coop. 3 - 300 liter bags in May 2023. Under their roost we have 2x2x6Lcatch trays that sit on top of the hemp and in those trays we use a 99% dust free saw lumber product that sifts w/a large wire cat scoop. Over the winter we added 2 more bags of hemp to get 8-9 inches high to build warmth on the floor. We have not done a single clean out. We spot clean the hemp and saw dust daily tossing only the top layer of hemp. Our chickens have been cooped up most of the winter since Nov, only going out in their enclosed run when it is over 20F which until these last few days has been rare. At $72 a bag it is spendy and rarely goes on sale. However, a no stink soft floor for the hens is worth it. I don't plan on doing a full clean out until April (fingers crossed). That's 5 bags at $75 w/tax over an 11 month period which breaks down to $7 a mo. Even if I have to do one earlier the cost is $10 a mo. Is it a costly up front investment, YES. However, if you have the time to do daily or bi-daily clean ups, it was worth it to me. I get the saw dust for a few dollars per 50lb garbage can and we have used 3/4 of it since October when we started using it as we are def throwing a lot more of that in the compost bin than the hemp. Does anyone have a cheaper option than Rent-a-Coop hemp that is soft and not sharp? All they sell by us locally is horse hemp which is more of a course, long straw type hemp. And no, RAC did not sponsor this post - I wish! LOL
