learning to make clothes has made me realize how unethical the fast fashion supply chain is.
I mean, I already knew that. But the process of buying new materials in natural fibers from ethical sources has truly made that fact sink in for me. I am learning knitting and crocheting, and can finally make clothes for myself. So as a relative newbie, I still have sticker shock at the price of yarn. Organic cotton and ethically sourced wool are expensive as HECK! I spend $60-120 on materials for a sweater, for example, before I even spend the hours to make it. Obviously it’s handmade, which stuff in the store is not. But I would’ve said that a sweater in the store for $60-120 felt expensive. And my preference is always for natural fibers.
It just really has clicked for me how unrealistic the fashion industry has made our cost expectations for new garments from new materials. It’s literally not possible to have ethical standards for sourcing and production and use all natural fibers on a solidly constructed garment and charge less than $100. I know that’s not even a price accessible to most people, too. Our system is so broken!
